Big data for UX: Learning from user behavioral patterns

The rise of big data is enabling companies across a wide variety of industries to get smarter about identifying formerly unobservable trends and patterns. Massive datasets have helped call centers make workers’ jobs easier, insurance companies process claims faster, and healthcare providers identify at-risk patients.

Big data is changing the way more and more people do their jobs. How can UX Researchers and Designers take advantage of this trend to improve our own work? What doors will big data open to us in the quest to meet users’ needs?

 

Big behavioral data

The answer? There’s a giant cache of information waiting to be turned into UX insights: behavioral data from website visitors. Aggregated information about how users interact with UIs through clicking, tapping, typing, swiping, navigating, moving the mouse around, and more constitute what we call “big behavioral data” – and it can provide valuable clues about the usability of our interfaces.
